A few months ago it would have been hard to anticipate what a Global Pandemic would mean for everyday life and I feel  safe in saying that me, along with the rest of the world, could never have imagined being thrust into a nationwide ‘lockdown’. Due to the wholly unprecedented nature of the situation, many of us now find ourselves with far more time on our hands and in turn far more need to seek distraction in order to maintain our sanity and protect our mental and physical wellbeing. However,  due to the restrictive duties placed upon us with the outbreak of the coronavirus, we are somewhat limited in the hobbies in which we are able to participate and coming to terms with the unfortunate reality that there is only so much television that one can watch. So in order to occupy my new found ‘free-time’ and prevent what could realistically be described as a full blown existential crisis, I have taken to my wardrobe to reflect on the pieces that are providing me with the most joy during an utterly bewildering beginning to 2020.

Doc Marten Boots. Lockdown Wardrobe

Why this piece?

Ok so I admit shoes may be an unusual choice when realistically I am at home 99.9% of the time. However, that being said, it is of vital importance that we do take a small amount of time getting that much needed fresh air and exercise, social distancing permitting. And for anyone who has ever purchased a pair of Dr Martens will know, they are some of the best walking shoes out there! Comfortable, reliable and forever resilient against the elements, these are my number one choice when taking to the street.

Where did I get it from?

Although now quite beaten and battered, I bought them shiny and new at the Dr Martens Shop in Manchester, my hometown.

My best memory?

An easy question! This would have to be my first day at university, and the day I additionally chose to debut the shoes. Therefore, my trusty Dr Martens are a ‘walking’ reminder of an exciting new chapter in life.

Why is it giving me life and keeping me sane?

Along with being a nostalgic treasure trove for good memories, the shoes are salvation for my sanity when I don them to take my essential exercise for the day. Sturdy as ever, these shoes provide me with the wear with all to keep myself fit in a time where perhaps it may seem easier to lounge around and simply do nothing.

Why this piece?

Well aside from being one of my favourite dresses of all time, it is astonishingly comfortable and easy to wear. To add to this, we have been fortunately blessed with glorious weather during our COVID-19 confinement and this garment provides for an extremely durable summer dress.

Where did I get it from?

This piece was quite a bargain found at the @eastendthriftstore, whilst enjoying a shopping trip with a friend. Along with other second-hand finds, this dress was very reasonably priced for under £5.00!!! Not bad at all considering how much wear and joy has been derived from this item of clothing.

My best memory?

This all denim embellished piece has provided for many good memories lounging languorously at Hyde Park during the summer months spent in the capital.

Why is it giving me life and keeping me sane?

Due to its simple nature this dress can be styled easily and doubles perfectly as loungewear, ideal for the garden and indoors. It is a reminder of normality and an effortless option to wear about the house when completing everyday tasks.

Why this Piece?

Due to (dare I say it) ’unstable’ British weather, there is always use for a good jumper. Not only unique, but its quirky style adds for a bit of interest, proving that lockdown, much like comfort, does not have to be boring and staid.

Where did I get it from?

A homemade hand-me-down, this jumper was knitted by my Grandmother for my father back in the 1980’s. Passed on to me almost 10 years ago, this cosy garment has lived many lives and with that lost a bit of shape, but still remains one of my go to pieces from a fairly expansive (perhaps edging on the ridiculous) jumper collection.

My best memory?

Far too many to count!

Why is it giving me life and keeping me sane?

It provides comfort in more than just the traditional sense. It’s warm, cosy and a reminder of family. The fact that it is homemade additionally emulates ideas of helping one another in difficult times and a reminder that the ‘make do and mend’ sustainable approach to fashion is more viable than ever before.

Why this piece?

As you have probably gathered, I am quite partial to a jumper!  Although fairly heavy and more suited perhaps to a winter wardrobe, I have found myself throwing this on perpetually as a source of comfort.

Where did I get it from?

Another hand-me-down, this jumper was originally purchased from British Home Stores (a real blast to the past) by my Grandfather and then eventually passed down to me.

My best memory?

Unusually the best remembrances I’ve experienced with this item were not actually whilst I was wearing it! My fondest memories came from my Grandad wearing it on family meals out.

Why is it giving me life and keeping me sane?

Not unlike my previous jumper option, it provides me with not only physical warmth and cosiness, but it also provides a nostalgic sense of comfort and ease. In other words, it puts your girl in a state of bliss and has been helping me through social distancing and semi-isolated living.

Why this Piece?

Now these may not look like loungewear but trust me they are the next best thing.  If I want a change from pyjama bottoms, these flared trousers are the best replacement, even if they look more suited to a bar than a living room sofa.

Where did I get it from?

Rather boringly there is not much of a back story behind this pair of trousers. I purchased them whilst browsing in Topshop.

My best memory?

A night out spent with friends in the Northern Quarter of Manchester City Centre.

Why is it giving me life and keeping me sane?

They are a reminder of normality and whilst wearing them I feel more capable of productivity, rather than the alternative.

Motivation and creativity have proven to be quite difficult in the past few weeks, so indeed I have turned to activities to keep my mind busy in sometimes failed attempts to stay positive. Initially, I was under the impression that I could pass the time reading and writing, which make up some of my favourite activities. But I was quick to discover that these alone are sometimes not enough! A mixture of variation and schedule seem to be key and I have found having a good browse through my wardrobe has indeed proved to be a helpful distraction. It has also brought me to the realisation that perhaps it is a time to push out the old and bring in the new and have a thorough ‘clear out’. Which of course would require me to delve into another of my favourite pass times, online shopping. Well that is a happy thought indeed.

What are your go-to garments during isolation? And why are they keeping you sane? We’d love to know! Please feel free to comment and share your own experiences below.
